The Chatuchak Weekend Market is a must do visit for most visitors to Bangkok, as well as a popular shopping venue for bargain hunting Thais. As the biggest outdoor weekend market in Thailand, it’s no surprise that you can find almost anything there: the ‘pin to an elephant’ expression seems to fit the market really well. Although the main market is mostly a weekend event, and visited by thousands every week, some stalls are open during the week as well. With the JJ Mall, Children’s Discovery Museum and Queen Sirikit Gardens nearby, a weekday visit to Chatuchak can be just as interesting.
What you will soon discover is that a couple of hours wandering around, Chatuchak Market has the ability to drain your stamina faster than your wallet. Our advice is simple: take a short break every half hour or so, get a drink and take a rest. This way you will get to see more of the market and all it has to offer.
For your break, there is no better stopping point than ‘Miss Dang’s Coffee Shop’, located near to the front of the Kasikorn Bank and the Chatuchak Plaza Sales Office. Not only will you receive a warm and friendly welcome from Dang, the owner, but also the finest coffee drink to be found anywhere in Bangkok, and fantastic value at 30 THB a cup, hot or iced. For those who prefer a long drink, you can choose from the wide array of fruit drinks, some really exotic, which include Guava, Lemon Grass, Butterfly Pea Flower and Palm Juice as well as the more usual traditional orange and coconut, at 20 or 30 THB each.
